Showstopper is a free Broadway-producer game — a theatrical riff on the viral roster game 162-0. You mount a five-show season pulled from decades of real Broadway history and find out whether the backers crown it the Perfect Season — or send the marquee down on closing night.
No single show grosses big and recoups its capital and runs forever and wins over the critics. A perfect season balances all four. You fill five category slots, the season is scored on four era-fair axes blended together, and your Producer Score is measured against a Perfect Producer benchmark — the best balanced season the catalog could possibly mount. Match it and you've produced Broadway immortality.
One show fills each of five categories:
Pick a mode on the home screen before you spin. Whichever you choose, the mode is shown above the reel the whole time so you always know which game you're playing.
The reel spins a random 5-year era. You book one of that era's real shows to fill an open category slot, then do it four more times. Full stats — acclaim, Tony haul, run length, capitalization — are shown on every card. The backers judge the finished season on box office + recoupment + longevity + acclaim combined.
The same era-spinning draft, but you book blind. The reviews, Tony wins, and run-length numbers are hidden — all you get is the title and the year. Trust your instincts, lock the season, and find out what the backers think of your gut.
The same producer's draft, now under a $30M capitalization cap. Every show carries its real capitalization cost, and the whole season has to fit under the cap. Value is the entire game: a gorgeous, overpriced flop is a trap, while a quietly great show that recoups cheap is a steal. Overpay early and you'll be scraping the bottom of the casting pool by closing night — build the best balanced season the cap allows.
The whole game flipped upside down: produce the worst season in Broadway history and chase the lowest score you can. The reels still spin — now you're hunting bombs, pans, and one-performance disasters. Every watchable show you book drags your turkey toward respectability, so the art is finding something even worse.
Named for Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark (~$75M, the king of Broadway bombs). Spend the most capitalization for the worst reception — blow the full $30M cap on gorgeous flops and chase the worst dollars-per-quality in the business. A spend floor applies: the whole point is to waste money, so cheap-and-bad doesn't count.
One shared puzzle for everyone, every day. A rotating lens spotlights a single axis — Audience, Critics, Box Office, Budget, or Tonys — sometimes inverted into a flop day, and often layered with an era filter or a tighter cap (a Tony-sweep day, a $40M Moneyball value hunt, a pre-1990 throwback, and more). You get one ranked attempt, your result lands on a global leaderboard, and your standing shows on the home screen — come back tomorrow to keep your streak alive.
Every show is graded on four era-fair axes, each a 0–100 percentile so a 1965 hit competes fairly with a 2020 one:

Once all five slots are filled, the season's average across the four axes becomes your Producer Score, tilted slightly toward the money: box office and budget together carry 55%, audience and critics 45% — "if you make money you get a second chance." In Off-Broadway and Spider-Man, every show also draws from a shared capitalization cap, so what you can afford matters as much as what's good. The same per-show axis values drive the daily lenses, the Turkey floor, and the Perfect Producer benchmark.
Showstopper is built from a curated catalog of real Broadway shows drawn from IBDB, the Tony Awards, and Playbill. Performance counts and Tony results are factual; critic scores and capitalization figures are best-effort estimates. Each show's four axes are computed as percentiles within the catalog so every era plays fair.
